Metaphor

Metaphor

A metaphor is a figure of speech in which a word or of phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable. In example, When Neil Young sings, "Love is a rose" is the vehicle for love. Meaning that love is delicate and sensitive as a rose.

A simile is a speech involving the comparision of the thing with another thing of a different kind used to make a description. For example "The interior of the Earth is rather like an onion, made up of a series of concentric shells or layers". Earth and an onion are both similar of a human sport. The definition of Hyperbole is an exaggerated statement or claims not meant to be taken literally. For example when someone or people state that they ate a whole cow, they don't really mean it. It means that they ate too much food and they are full. The word Parable means a simple story used to illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson. For example "The legs of the lame are not equal: so is a parable in the mouth of fools."

As I was reading, I came along a few examples of metaphors. In the poem "Joy" the metaphor "Admist the frozen white, a tiny tip of Green. Meaning that in the middle of the snow, there a few pieces of grass. n the second poem "Play" the metaphor, "Touch them with your finger tip. But there is a barrier of glass. Meaning, as I made an attempt to touch the rainbow, I noticed that the window was there to protect it.A metaphor taken from the poem "Treasures". "The child raised the lid of the battered box." The boy removed the lid of the beaten up box to reveal what was inside. Another metaphor was taken from the poem "Creativity". "Its writes it's story and the ink is living light. As the wind blows the tree is writing it's story and the sun light seeping through the branches is it's testimony. In the next and final poem "Peace" a metaphor was taken from it. "The wind is now a roaring, smashing, monster of destruction, raking all man's work. As the wind blows it's becoming more powerful. It's destroying all the work that the men worked on.

There are five blind men using there senses to see what the elephant is like. They all use different similies to describe the elephants characteristics. One of them said that "The elephant is like a tree killed by global warming". The elephant is being compared to a tree because it's big and rough.

In this paragraph I will be discussing Personifications found in poems. In example in the poem "Dinnertime Chorus", "The teapot sang as the water boiled." Meaning that as the water was boiling the tea kettle was getting hot. This is a personification because us human have the ability to sing and the kettle "whistles or sing" when its hot enough. The next personification comes from the poem "Natures Chorus". "Cherry trees form a circle and the oaks dance just like debutantes." As the cherry trees moved in a circular motion, the oaks danced as if they were debutantes. These children of nature can't dance because they doesn't have any human physical characteristics.

In the fable "The Wolf in Sheep's Clothing" there was a metaphor. I found this metaphor "But one day it found the skin of a sheep that had been flayed and thrown aside, so it put in on over its own pelt and strolled down among the sheep." Meaning that the wolf had came along a dead and empty caucus of sheep skin. So the wolf put it on. When a lamb came over and noticed the "sheep" it started to follow it. But little did it know that it was the wolf. So the wolf continued to walk as the lamb followed. Then the wolf made an attempt to attack the lamb and he became successful.

When reading a few poems by Emily Dickinson I came across two metaphors. The first poem came from the poem "Hope Is The Thing with Feathers". Emily is comparing a bird to hope. Meaning that its an exotic and liberating creature. In the poem "Pedigree" the metaphor "The pedigree of honey doesn't concern the bee". Meaning that the smell or taste of honey doesn't have an impact on the bee.

The poem "A leaf falls, ones loneliness" is metaphor because its describing how the leaf is being observed. Its being observed by the way its falling and the way its impacting that person life. As it just randomly falls out of the tree this person is analyzing how its shifting from left t o right very slowly.

The metaphor "A leaf falls, ones loneliness" is yet simple but complex. I say that because before I was even up to this part of the paper, I was reading it and couldn't understand what it was saying or what it meant. Then I finally asked Ted what it was saying and he explained it to me. Some metaphors have a impact on my life. In example "You can't have your cake and eat it too." Meaning that you can't always get what you want and be happy all the time. Cause if you were to get what you wanted all the time without working for it you wouldn't be satisfied.

""A Roller Coaster - Life consists of ups and downs, and we are along for the ride. This metaphor is used in everyday life because nobody knows what life is going to throw at them everyday. We just have to make the best out of each day and remain strong. This metaphor applies to me because I tend to have bad days; then they turn out to become a good one before its over. In example when my mom is in a bad mood and she's yelling at everyone in my house in the morning. It's tend to mess with my mood before I am starting my day in school. But when I'm having a good day I tend to be in a great mood and a class clown, but more in a positive way. I also get my work done in a faster pace and try to help as many people out as possible.
