Irony

Irony

The expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect. In example when I was on the train there was an ad for a website where I can order food online. They had a picture of a fish and a man that was scuba diving. He saw a fish and said "Sushi". The fish had heard and seen him and said "S#!T". The name of the website is "Grubhub."

The poem Richard Cory was written by Edwin Arlington Robinson. It describes the life of a young wealthy man named Richard. Richard Cory is a wealthy young man. Richard is handsome and highly envied. Richard was an good dresser, the way he behaved was like anybody else should behave when they're wealthy. He's not cocky nor arrogant. As Richard walked through the town people were amazed and shocked about he carried himself and how he choose to present himself. To prove this, in the poem it says that "He was a gentleman from sole to crown, clean favored, and imperially slim." The last line of the poem which stated "And Richard Cory, one calm summer night, went home and put a bullet through his head.", It surprised me because as wealthy person who would've thought that he would commit suicide. The poem didn't really shock me. The last line really didn't the most of the surprising. The town citizens were jealous of Richard because he was rich and handsome. Also he was very polite and he even worked. This poem is quit similar to a news paper article because it's stating the main characteristics about the person. Also how people treated him and how he had an impact on the community. The poem had a soft but yet gentle tone to it. It wasn't complicated not rushed. It made sense every line and it was easy to comprehend. The irony of this situation was created by the way the town people reacted to seeing Richard walk the streets. Although Richard was polite and highly respectful, they still didn't like him and envied him. Him committing suicide at the end of the day was a dramatic turn of events. The story is being told from a friend point of view.

The story "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell is about a group of sailors. They sail into the night where its very dark and its hard to see. A crew member named Rainsford was sitting in a chair while smoking on the deck. His pipe had fell into the water and he had to jump in the water to get it. As he jumped in he was struggling to rise back to the surface. As Rainsford was making his way back to the yacht, it was preventing him from re entering it. The speed of the yacht was making strong and heavy waves. Altogether Rainsford was yelling trying to get someones attention on the yacht. But nobody heard him. The more Rainsford struggled to receive someones attention the farther he was being pulled away from the yacht. The yacht lights became distant and firefly like. Then eventually it vanished. As this happened Rainsford had remembered in which direction the shots had came from. The right he thought, the decided to swim in that direction. As he got closer he heard a animal screeching in fear, followed by a gun shot. He thought "where there is man, there is food". Then another shot was fired. He noticed the sound of the gun and said "A twenty-two". Rainsford made his way to the island and found himself on a trial of footprints. He noticed that it was a trial of a hunter who was wearing boots. So he followed the trial until he found himself infront of a house. He knocked on the door twice before a older man came to the door. As he did he told him not to be alarmed. The male who answered the door greeted him as if he was in the military. Later on in the story Rainsford met the general. Rainsford told him how hungry and tired he was, and he fell off his yacht. So the general came about with this game that he had to compete in to receive a bed and a meal. Obviously Rainsford accepted the challenge and he won. Rainsford had surprised the general when he seen him behind the curtain. Rainsford was given the bed.Being separated from a yacht when retrieving something is mind blowing and yet scary. A lot of things are running through your mind. "Did anyone notice me ? or Am I going to make it back to civilization". This situation is important because no matter where or what you come from. The conflict of the story is based on a Man to Man

As I read "The House That Slaves Built" I learned that Thomas Jefferson had used slaves to work for him from 1804 until his death in 1850. Also the white house was built by slaves. They majority of them were owned and a small portion of them were liberated. According to the article the White House is considered to be powerful symbol of change for all american races. Now since Obama was elected president it's really captivating for us african americans to take notice of the first African-American family to live in the White House. In the nineteenth century the most important and famous guest was the Abolitionist Fredrick Douglass.
